Philippi Earns Australian Derby 2013 Bid with Tulloch Stakes Win

As the action of Golden Slipper Day continued with race three it was Mick Kent’s progressive colt Philippi who was the best of the three-year-old boys when winning the $175,000 Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens ahead of a possible shot at next weekend’s 2013 Australian Derby.

Rated a $9 chance for the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick through prior to today’s success, the Host three-year-old was having their fourth run of the season.

In their interstate debut Philippi, fitted with blinkers to sharpen them up, improved on their last start second to Hvasstan in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley last month to take out the $175,000 Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) in impressive fashion.

Sure to firm in the Australian Derby odds now, they were given a good ride from star hoop Luke Nolen who also won the day’s opening race and was able to really show their skill over the final few hundred metres when they opened it up.

Positioned about eight lengths off the leaders coming round the turn for home Philippi ($6.50) and Nolen made their move at the perfect time just as the field started to straighten.

They came quickly down the outside and shot away out wide on the track, racing off to beat home Gai Waterhouse’s stayer of the future Hippopus ($7), who had won their previous two starts over 1900m at Canterbury, by three lengths and triple figure roughie Sir Denzel ($101) who was the real surprise runner in the Tulloch a further length away again in third.

Race favourite Proverb ($2.60) meanwhile found themselves caught in traffic racing mid-field in the centre throughout and had a hard time getting a clear run, losing momentum which they never regained to cross seventh.

It was a dominant three-year-old performance by today’s Tulloch Stakes winner heading into the Derby which was still very much on the agenda according to the Cranbourne-based Kent.

“He’s always been a nice horse,” Kent said.

“He raced fairly keenly in it but I thought he went to the line pretty good.

“We’ll stay in the (Derby) game at the moment.”

Nolen was also pleased with the horse once they settled into things and rated them a top chance to return to the races seven days later for the ATC Derby.

“I did help him (having blinkers on),” he said.

“He was always in control of the race (once he settled).

“We probably did give a good start away (but) he rounded them up with relative ease.

“That run might top him up nicely for the following week.”
