Hot Snitzel Sebring Stakes Winner 2013 – Golden Slipper Day Results

The final race on a bumper nine-event Golden Slipper Day program at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon has been won by the Gerald Ryan-trained Hot Snitzel who took out the 2013 Sebring HKJC Stakes in a dominant display.

After a lengthy winning drought, the son of Snitzel not having won a race since the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes at Warwick Farm in February last year, Hot Snitzel was back in the winners’ stall second-up here after a luckless sixth at the track when resuming on March 23.

Ridden patiently by the in-form Blake Shinn Hot Snitzel relished their inside barrier three draw and the drop back from 59kg last start to the 56.5kg to come home strong in the $125,000 Group 3 Sebring HKJC Stakes (1200m) taking their record to six wins from 19 starts for over $730,000 in prize money.

“To finish the day on a high like that, that’s just unbelievable,” part-owner Michael Ward said.

“And hat’s off to Blake Shinn, he’s really riding in great form at the moment.

“Hot Snitzel, getting the weight allowance today really worked in his favour and he’s done quite well.”

After settling in fourth behind the leader Hidden Warrior throughout the early stages, Hot Snitzel ($15) broke away on the straight with 100m to go.

On the line they had two and a quarter lengths to spare over the Mick Price-trained Smokin’ Joey ($21) who came from a mile back to run second ahead of last start Maurice McCarton Stakes winner See The World ($8) who overcame a wide draw to finish in the money.

“He’s quite funny he handles slow ground at certain tracks,” Ryan said of the Sebring Stakes winner.

“The horse has come back good.

“He had a wind operation after (running 13th in) the Galaxy last year.

“To be perfectly honest I thought he still needed this run, but he has been going good.

“Good for him to bounce back today.”

Shinn was also pleased with the way Hot Snitzel hit the line in the Sebring.

“This horse was just dominant to the line,” he said.

“I got into a lovely position form a nice barrier draw.

“He just travels so well and got through the ground really nicely.

“He quickened so well, he’s a really capable horse on his day and he proved that today.”

Ryan originally planned to head to Queensland for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with Hot Snitzel to target the $175,000 Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on April 27.

The sunshine state produced good results for the now four-year-old in their juvenile season as they won a Gold Coast black type by over six lengths before winning the Group 2 BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) by three lengths and then run second in the Group 1 TJ Smith over the Eagle Farm mile in June of 2011.

However after their good effort in the Sebring the Sydney-based trainer said he might reevaluate and take Hot Snitzel onto Royal Randwick where the horse enjoyed a stakes win in October of 2011.

“There’s not a lot there (at Randwick) for him,” Ryan said.

“We’ve had Queensland in the back of our mind, thinking about a weight-for-age there in about three weeks’ time, but might go back to the drawing board and look at Randwick because he does go well there too.”

The action of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival continues over the next few weeks starting next Saturday with Australian Derby Day at Royal Randwick where a number of Golden Slipper Day winners will be back on display.
