Classy Pierro Wins 2013 George Ryder Stakes

Superstar colt Pierro has again shown his class to win a fifth Group 1 title in the 2013 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill today.

The three-year-old overcame some early trouble and covered plenty of ground rounding the home turn but showed his superiority with a grinding finish.

New Zealand veteran King Mufhasa led bravely for the majority of the race before being tackled in the dying stages by a wide run from Pierro.

Waterhouse has never held back in her praise for the son of Lonhro but even she was left in awe of his performance today.

“I thought oh my gosh, he couldn’t have been in a worse position,” Waterhouse said.

“I very rarely get goosebumps watching horses, I’ve watched a few, but today I really got goosebumps.

“He’s a special horse, he’s a sexy horse. He’s the best.”

It was the third straight win for the winner of more than $4 million in prizemoney who is well and truly on track for his major autumn target of the 2013 Doncaster Mile in two weeks.

Jockey Nash Rawiller admitted the boom colt wasn’t completely comfortable on the slow track but admired his ability to get the job done in trying conditions.

“When you ride a horse that is so balanced and beautiful to ride when he puts a foot out of place you feel it straight away,” Waterhouse said.

“I’ve been saying it for quite some time [he’s the best I’ve ridden]. Take nothing away from the great mare More Joyous, she’ll go down in history as one of the best I’ve ridden, but this bloke’s something pretty special.”

Chris Waller’s brave multiple Group 1 winner Shoot Out finished third and also looks on track for the Doncaster, the race he finished second in last year.

The George Ryder may be over for another year but the autumn action continues next week and great odds will be found at bookmaker.com.au.
