Pierro Poised for More Group 1 Success in 2013 George Ryder Stakes

The Group 1 2013 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) is likely to be the latest conquest on glamour colt Pierro’s resume after Saturday’s Golden Slipper day meeting at Rosehill.

The three-year-old starred when powering to Golden Slipper success last year and he looks set to again have a major impact on the richest day in Australian racing.

Currently at $1.60 in the George Ryder market, the price is well and truly justified.

Pierro’s record stands at 10 wins from 12 starts, with nearly $3.9 million in prizemoney. Four of those victories have come at Group 1 level and he proved himself against the older horses when winning the Canterbury Stakes last month.

While the likely wet track will bother some of his rivals, it won’t affect the star son of Lonhro.

Pierro won the Silver Slipper as a two-year-old on a heavy 9 and further proved his wet-track credentials when holding off Rebel Dane in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes on March 2.

Always confident, trainer Gai Waterhouse told RSN this morning her number one horse will “take a stack of beating.”

“He’s great in a dogfight and he’s the best colt that we have in Australasia by so far it’s not funny,” Waterhouse said.

“This is a wonderful race for him, it’s the perfect distance.

“He’s handled the wet many times before.”

The George Ryder is the final lead-up to Pierro’s ultimate autumn goal in the Group 1 2013 Doncaster Mile (1600m) for which Pierro is a $2.30 favourite at bookmaker.com.au.
