The Rosehill track for the 2013 Golden Slipper has been downgraded following more rain in the past 24 hours.
The track is now a heavy (8) after being rated a slow (7) on Thursday morning and with isolated showers for the next 24 hours it is unlikely to be better than a slow (7) on raceday.
The rain will see many Golden Slipper runners racing in unknown conditions, with most of the field yet to be tested on worse than dead.
Overreach is a $2.35 favourite but the rain raises some doubts over the star filly as she has only raced on good and dead surfaces.
The top elect has drifted after being as short as $2.10 earlier in the week.
The runner with the best wet-track credentials appears to be Overreach’s stablemate Sweet Idea ($12) who won the Silver Slipper in heavy conditions.
Also with experience in wet ground is Ruud Awakening ($13) who will attempt to become the first New Zealand-trained horse to win the Slipper.
The Stephen Marsh-trained galloper’s record shows she is yet to race on worse than Dead but New Zealand track and Australian track ratings differ.
She won on a dead track back home, which is the equivalent of a heavy track here,” Marsh said yesterday.
“Our heavies, they’re real heavy.”
Endorsing Ruud Awakening is the rider of one her key rivals.
Kerrin McEvoy will be aboard $9 chance Sidestep but is predicting the Ruud Awakening-Craig Williams combination will be tough to beat despite their barrier 18 draw.
The other runners considered among the strongest Golden Slipper chances are Criterion ($13) and Villa Verde ($13).
