Wet 2013 Golden Slipper Likely

The prospect of a wet 2013 Golden Slipper at Rosehill on Saturday is becoming more likely after heavy rain fell in Sydney on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The track was rated a Slow 7 this morning and with isolated showers predicted over the next few days, the best case scenario is likely to be a Slow 6 or a Dead 5 on raceday.

If a wet track is delivered on Saturday it leaves a number of Golden Slipper runners heading into unknown territory, with most yet to be tested on slow or heavy ground.

Odds-on favourite Overreach was convincing on a Dead 5 when thumping her Widden Stakes rivals by six lengths in February but hasn’t raced in worse conditions than faced on that day.

One horse who has proven their ability to perform on all surfaces is Overreach’s stablemate Sweet Idea ($14).

After previously running on only Good tracks, the Snitzel filly proved her versatility in the Group 2 Silver Slipper last month when scoring a gritty win on a Heavy 9 track.

Silver Slipper runner-up Whiskey Allround won’t contest the Golden Slipper but third Charlie Boy ($34) and fourth I’m All The Talk ($21) will both be there.

I’m All The Talk was forced to work hard early on that day and was tough to hang on to finish in the top four before ensuring his Slipper spot when winning the Skyline Stakes on March 16.

New Zealand filly Ruud Awakening ($13) has been winning on Good tracks of late but began her career in October on tracks rated Dead 5 and Dead 6.
