Glamour colt Pierro is an odds-on favourite to continue his strong autumn form in the Group 1 2013 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
The three-year-old is rated a $1.60 chance at bookmaker.com.au after storming out of the gates to begin his campaign with two victories.
Gai Waterhouse’s number one galloper was gritty when winning the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes in heavy conditions first-up before beating More Joyous to claim the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes.
The Lonhro colt’s record is outstanding and it will take a magnificent performance to upset him this weekend. Pierro has won 10 of 12 starts and collected nearly $3.9 million in prizemoney.
Only two other horses fall under double figures, with Gary Portelli’s three-year-old Rebel Dane joined by Chris Waller’s multiple Group 1 winner Shoot Out at $8.
Waller knows he is up against a superstar in Pierro but isn’t conceding defeat.
”Shoot Out has been the benchmark for the older weight-for-age horses at a mile but he meets the new kid on the block in Pierro and we have all seen how brilliant he is,” Waller told SMH.
”I think the month between runs really suits Shoot Out because he is such a great fresh horse, but he will need to be at the top of his game.”
The performance cemented the six-year-old’s position as a top class galloper after he announced himself in the southern states when winning the Toorak Handicap at the Spring Carnival.
No other runner is given a hope in the market, with Waller-trained veteran Danleigh and Gai Waterhouse’s four-year-old Laser Hawk both at $21.
Other horses in the George Ryder Stakes market include in-form New Zealand gelding Veyron ($34), Waller’s import Reliable Man ($41), Emirates Stakes winner Happy Trails ($51) and out-of-sorts triple Group 1 winner Manighar ($51).
