Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Bart Cummings’ Flight Stakes winning filly Norzita is the narrow favourite in an open Vinery Stud Stakes 2013 betting market for this Saturday’s showdown at Rosehill Gardens.
The $400,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), formerly known as the Storm Queen Stakes, runs on Golden Slipper Day as one of the meeting’s five elite level features and has drawn a talented field of 15 three-year-old fillies led by Norzita.
A daughter of Aussie sire Thorn Park, Norzita is after her second Group 1 trophy having won the Flight Stakes over the Randwick mile back in October.
She’s had three runs this time including a first-up victory at Moonee Valley, a second to Flying Snitzel in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington and most recently a close third when finishing just a long neck away from the winner Appearance in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic over the 1500m at Rosehill on March 23.
She goes up to the 2000m for the first time on Saturday but after drawing nicely in gate seven she’s tipped to handle the assignment, Norzita paying $2.60 as the top fancy in the Vinery Stud Stakes odds.
There are then two other fillies fighting for second spot in the markets with:
- #3 Habibi ($4.40) – Early market mover prepared by Donna & Dean Logan in New Zealand, races down under for the first time on the back of an excellent Group 1 NZ Derby victory over the mile and a half last month, drop back in distance here will see them sharp and the Kiwi form in the 3YO races this time of year usually stacks
- #2 Dear Demi ($4.80) – Clarry Conners-trained Dehere filly won the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) second-up but failed last start with a below par 11th in the Coolmore Classic, drop back in class here but still need to improve around five lengths to get close to Norzita, get more ground to do just that however and are a Group 1 winner having taken out the Crown Oaks in Melbourne last November so class is there when they get up in distance
Other longer-priced fancies in with a genuine shot of scoring an upset then include smart Melbourne visitor You’re So Good ($14) racing in Sydney for the first time after a second in the Australian Guineas and a Moonee Valley win over the mile against her own kind, Gai Waterhouse’s former Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Driefontein ($16) out for first win since February last year, and Summerbliss ($17) coming off a third to You’re So Good in the Alexandra Stakes.
