The money is starting to flow in for the 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m) as the start to Saturday’s $3.5 million Rosehill feature race draws closer.
Overreach remains a steady $2.15 favourite at bookmaker.com.au but finally has some company under double figures.
Darley-owned colt Sidestep has received plenty of support and has shortened from $11 on Wednesday evening to $9.
The Peter Snowden-trained galloper is now the clear second pick in Slipper betting despite a seven-day turnaround putting some doubts in his trainer’s mind.
“The horse seems to be taking it all quite well at the moment but I just don’t know,” Snowden said
Sidestep is coming off a big win in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes where he flew home and will have blinkers applied in an effort to sharpen up his start his weekend.
Criterion, who was previously second favourite, has drifted from $11 to $13 despite brining strong from into the race.
The son of Sebring is chasing a third consecutive win after taking out the Black Opal Stakes in Canberra and the Group 2 Todman Stakes at Rosehill.
Villa Verde is also at $13 after opening at $12. The Bendigo-based filly beat Overreach on debut in the spring but was no match when beaten 4 1/2 lengths to run second in the Moet And Chandon Stakes last month.
Overreach’s stablemate Sweet Idea has shortened from $15 to $14 and is likely to get a good run from barrier four.
The Silver Slipper winner will be ridden by experienced jockey Jim Cassidy who believes his mount is an upset chance.
“You’ve got to have luck in running and if we get that, I think I’m on a knockout,” Cassidy said.
Other horses hovering around that mark are New Zealand filly Ruud Awakening ($13) and Waterhouse’s third Slipper runner Whittington ($18).
