Villa Verde jockey Michael Rodd is unfazed by a barrier 17 draw for the speedy Bendigo filly in Saturday’s $3.5 million Group 1 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill.
The Bendigo-based grey is at the opposite end of the stalls to odds-on favourite Overreach, who received the inside alley.
Rodd admits a closer draw would have been ideal but isn’t conceding the race is already won and run.
“She is very good from the barriers so I’ll take my time coming across and will hopefully end up three deep with cover,” Rodd said.
Villa Verde will be out to turn the tables on Overreach who she finished 4 1/2 lengths behind when second in the Moet and Chandon Stakes on March 23.
That was the Shaun Dwyer-trained filly’s only Slipper lead-up, having begun her career with two dominant victories during the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Rodd said it will be a different proposition on Saturday as Overreach will have to work hard early in what is always a high pressure race.
“She won’t be having a picnic up on the speed ,” Rodd said.
“She’ll have to kick up which will allow us to hit the line late.”
Villa Verde put the finishing touches on her Golden Slipper lead-up at Randwick on Tuesday, pleasing Dwyer.
“Sizzling gallop for Villa Verde at Randwick this morning,” Dwyer said on twitter.
Dwyer also said he is unconcerned by the wide barrier, suggesting it could be less of a disadvantage than the inside.
Villa Verde is a long-priced third favourite at $12 behind Overreach ($2.15) and Criterion ($11).
