Bart Cummings’ talented Flight Stakes winning filly Norzita will shoot for her second Group 1 title this Saturday when she jumps one of the top fancies in a smart 2013 Vinery Stud Stakes field at Rosehill Racecourse.
Set to run as Golden Slipper Day Race 4 at 1:55pm (AEST), this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) has drawn an excellent field of 15 three-year-old fillies including Norzita.
Due to jump from barrier seven with Hugh Bowman in the saddle the daughter of Thorn Park enjoyed a stellar spring in Sydney last season which culminated with a Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes victory over the Randwick Mile.
This time in she’s had three good runs starting with a win in the Listed Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in February before running second to Flying Snitzel in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.
She raced in Sydney last start over the 1500m at Rosehill when a very close third beaten just a long neck by Appearance and Red Tracer, who run in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) on Saturday, in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).
Back to her own age on Saturday in the same barrier as the Coolmore Norzita certainly looks the filly to beat.
Of course there’s plenty of other big names in the Vinery Stud Stakes in 2013 including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein and Clarry Conners’ Dear Demi who have both suffered wide draws with gates 11 and 15 respectively.
Winner of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast in her juvenile season, Fastnet Rock filly Driefontein has been right up there in all six of her runs since December.
Her last effort was a sixth in the Coolmore when beaten under two lengths where she also had barrier 11 and which she will be looking to improve on making her a nice Place chance.
Dehere three-year-old Dear Demi is also out to bounce back after her 11th in the Coolmore before which the reigning Crown Oaks champion won the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm.
The real unknown in the Vinery Stud Stakes field meanwhile is Habibi, Ruakaka-based trainer Donna Logan bringing over her blistering Ekraar filly from NZ to seek the Sydney Autumn Carnival riches.
Back home Habibi has kicked off their career in the finest of fashions winning six of her seven starts most recently the Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie when getting the better of the boys after scoring barrier one.
Saturday she races down under for the first time but her chances were boosted as one of the big winners in the Vinery Stud Stakes barriers coming up trumps with gate three.
Other notable chances include Flight Stakes runner-up from the spring Longport, the Michael Kent-trained Crown Oaks third placed Summerbliss and You’re So Good.
