The likelihood that grand sprinter Hay List will again face off with the world’s best horse Black Caviar in the Group 1 2013 TJ Smith (1200m) has become greater after a gallop at Gosford this morning.
Hay List, a long time bridesmaid to Black Caviar, returned from lengthy layoff to run fourth in the Challenge Stakes last month but was scratched from the Galaxy with a minor hoof problem.
The seven-year-old appears to have put that behind him, pleasing regular jockey Glyn Schofield who was aboard for the hit-out this morning.
“He wasn’t out to do much but I was impressed,” Schofield told TVN.
“He will have a good hit out at the trials given it will be a month between runs.”
The Statue Of Liberty gelding will trial over 1000m at Randwick on Friday and if all goes well he will press on to Saturday week’s TJ Smith.
The last time Hay List met Black Caviar was in the 2012 Lightning Stakes where he was beaten two lengths in second place.
They have both contested the TJ Smith before, with Black Caviar famously running down Hay List when she looked like might be troubled before dashing clear to win by three lengths.
The competition Black Caviar has faced in her most recent victories has been considered suspect but the TJ Smith is shaping up as a high quality affair.
Already confirmed for the clash is Bel Sprinter who produced a magnificent performance to win the Group 1 Galaxy on the weekend after missing the start.
Other confirmed TJ Smith runners include Queensland’s number one sprinter Buffering and Golden Rose winner Epaulette.
