Following the official release of the 2013 Golden Slipper field and barriers the updated markets for Saturday’s Rosehill feature are now out at bookies around the country with Gai Waterhouse’s rails-drawn filly Overreach retaining her spot at the top of the odds.
The talented Exceed And Excel two-year-old was the big winner in the barrier draw for the weekend’s $3.5 million Group 1 Toohey’s New Golden Slipper (1200m) coming up with gate one of 18 in the maximum 16-starter field.
Overreach has had three runs to date including back-to-back wins this time in with a six length Widden Stakes victory followed by her four and a half length romp over former Golden Slipper favourite Villa Verde in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 23.
Her flawless lead-up form and now the perfect Golden Slipper barrier have seen Overreach tighten in the markets now at a quote of $2.15.
Incredibly there are no other two-year-olds under double figures in the Golden Slipper betting odds this year.
Overreach’s closest rival is considered to be Criterion who is at $11 after also drawing ideally with barrier two, jockey Hugh Bowman likely to follow the speedy favourite and her hoop Tommy Berry from the jump.
David Payne’s Sebring colt Criterion entered Golden Slipper calculations with their Black Opal Stakes win in Canberra last month which they backed up from to win the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) here on March 23 – the premier lead-up race for Golden Slipper-bound colts and geldings.
Following Overreach and Criterion in the Golden Slipper final field markets are then:
- #4 Sidestep ($12) – Nice gate five draw for the best fancied of Peter Snowden’s three Golden Slipper acceptors, Exceed And Excel colt was second in the Black Opal before losing their rider in the Todman – atoning when winning the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes over this track and distance last Saturday in a cracking display
- #14 Villa Verde ($12) – Early blow for the former favourite with the second widest gate (17 into 15), Shaun Dwyer’s Not A Single Doubt filly is the only horse to have beaten Overreach before when winning the Inglis Debutants Stakes in Melbourne last October, also three length winner at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day before their distant Reisling Stakes second which they will be out to improve on
- #12 Ruud Awakening ($13) – Still one of the top fancies despite this classy New Zealand raider coming up with the disastrous gate 18, Group 1 winner back home last start, Craig Williams opted to ride them over Criterion, Stephen Marsh’s daughter of Bernardini hasn’t got the barrier but everything else is spot on
Other notable hopefuls include two of Overreach’s stablemates Whittington ($15) and Silver Slipper Stakes winning Snitzel filly Sweet Idea ($15), the second emergency Il Cavallo ($16) who needs two scratchings to gain a start, and David Hayes’ Blue Diamond Stakes – Todman Stakes runner-up Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($20) also wide with gate 15.
