A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Gai Waterhouse’s in-form stayer Julienas has been handed a 1.5kg weight penalty for the 2013 Sydney Cup at the end of the month for their eye-catching win in the Listed NE Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill over the weekend.
The six-year-old Cape Cross gelding posted back-to-back wins having earlier taken out the Listed Sky High Stakes (1900m) at the same track just seven days earlier when beating home the Chris Waller-trained Permit by one and three quarter lengths in the NE Manion this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The English import, winner of the Wyong Gold Cup last September, has been a consistent force for Waterhouse since debuting down under in August last year and looks on track for their season grand final – the $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on April 27.
Their big NE Manion Cup success didn’t go unnoticed by the handicappers with the horse penalised 1.5kg taking them up to a total of 55kg for the Sydney Cup.
They also caught the attention of the bookies with Julienas now the $5 favourite in the Sydney Cup odds having firmed in from their opening futures’ price of $11.
Waterhouse has confirmed she will give Julienas another run before the Sydney Cup showdown penciling in the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) at Randwick on April 13, the winner of which is exempt from a further Sydney Cup weight penalty.
Former top fancy Maluckyday now occupies the second line of Sydney Cup betting at $7.50, the Hawkes-trained Zabeel gelding looking back in form with a good third to Foreteller in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on March 23.
Maluckyday, second in the 2010 Melbourne Cup behind French star Americain, races at Rosehill again this Saturday in the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m).
The other top chances for the two mile classic are then considered to be Murray Baker’s star New Zealand colt It’s A Dundeel ($8) who has come in from $10 after winning the Randwick Guineas – Rosehill Guineas double, fellow Kiwi Sangster ($10) who recently won the Auckland Cup back home, progressive stallion Hathras ($11) who won by nine lengths at Warwick Farm over 2200m on March 21, and the Chris Waller-trained Lexus Stakes winner Kelinni ($11).
