Golden Slipper Field 2013 Released

The Australian Turf Club has this morning released the official 2013 Golden Slipper field of final acceptors ahead of the world’s richest two-year-olds’ race running at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday, April 6.

One of a bumper five Group 1 races on the Sydney card this weekend, the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) has this year drawn 16 starters plus two emergencies.

Early favourite in the Golden Slipper odds at bookies around the country is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Exceed And Excel filly Overreach who was last seen running away with the Group 2 Reisling Stakes victory over the Golden Slipper track and distance on March 23.

Reisling Stakes runner-up Villa Verde has also been accepted for the Slipper on Saturday, Shaun Dwyer’s Bendigo-based Not A Single Doubt filly previously undefeated with dual stakes wins in Melbourne during the spring.

Four-time Golden Slipper winning trainer Waterhouse meanwhile has also accepted for Tale Of The Cat colt Whittington last seen winning at Warwick Farm back on March 9 and progressive Snitzel filly Sweet Idea who backed up from a second in the Magic Millions Classic in January to win the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) in the wet at Rosehill early last month.

Also with multiple Golden Slipper acceptors are Rosehill-based Gerald Ryan who will saddle up Pago Pago Stakes runner-up Dothraki and Charlie Boy coming off a Todman Stakes fourth, and Peter Snowden with three hopefuls.

Snowden’s top-rated chance is Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes winning colt Sidestep who will be joined in the Golden Slipper field by Kuroshio and Guelph – all three prodigy of top Aussie sire Exceed And Excel.

The other top fancy for the Golden Slipper trophy is then the Stephen Marsh-trained Ruud Awakening who continues to gain favouritism with the punters.

Out to become the first New Zealand-trained two-year-old to win the Golden Slipper the Bernardini filly is yet to race down under but has won five of her six starts back home most recently a big effort in the Group 1 Haunui Farm Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on March 9.

Other notable hopes then include Todman Stakes winning Sebring colt Criterion who also took out the Black Opal Stakes in Canberra, and Todman Stakes runner-up Fast ‘N’ Rocking who also ran second in the Blue Diamond Stakes in Melbourne in February.

The 2013 Golden Slipper Barrier Draw will be conducted at midday (AEST) and published right here at Races.com.au with updates to the betting markets to follow.
