Fiveandahalfstar Favourite in 2013 The BMW Odds

Ideal lead-up form and a great gate have seen the Anthony Cummings-trained Fiveandahalfstar installed at the top of The BMW 2013 odds for this Saturday’s Golden Slipper Day feature, the star three-year-old looking to break a streak of close second place finishes with their second Group 1 win.

The three-year-old Hotel Grand three-year-old is one of 12 smart staying types engaged in this year’s $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) which will run as Rosehill Race 5 at 2:35pm (AEST) this Saturday.

Upset winner of the Victoria Derby over the 2500m in Melbourne last spring, Fiveandahalfstar finally gets up to the 2400m for the first time this prep in The BMW and should prove hard to beat with a good run from barrier five with Hugh Bowman aboard.

The Australian Derby-bound champ has been in flying form this autumn too with four super second place finishes on the trot, most recently behind Foreteller in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 23.

With their Group 1 win over a comparative distance last prep it is Fiveandahalfstar topping the The BMW odds at a quote of $3.

They are followed in the relatively open markets then by five other single-figure fancies with:

  • #1 Foreteller ($6.50) – Surprise Ranvet Stakes winner last time out from the Chris Waller stables, hasn’t seen the 2400m though so unknown at the distance, ran a shocker the start before in the Australian Cup so is hit and miss
  • #5 Maluckyday ($7) – One of the best stayers getting around a few years back, has been plagued by injury and setbacks but looked back on track last start when the Zabeel six-year-old from Team Hawkes ran third in the Ranvet
  • #10 Hathras ($7) – Wide gate 12 draw but distance to overcome, the Kris Lees-trained four-year-old is one of the unknowns in the mix having had just six starts to date, none in black type company, won over 2200m at Warwick Farm last month so distance will suit
  • #11 Silent Achiever ($9) – Roger James-trained Kiwi mare, this four-year-old has been mixing it with the best for the past few seasons and has ability, seen the mile and a half once before when sixth in the Australian Derby last autumn, comes off a fifth in the Ranvet
