Sidestep wins Pago Pago Stakes 2013 – Golden Slipper run possible

Darley colt Sidestep put in an impressive performance to win the 2013 Pago Pago Stakes and earn a shot at the Golden Slipper. With two runners already set to run in the premier two-year-old race, trainer Peter Snowden and Darely will decide whether Sidestep joins Guelph and Kuroshio in the Slipper next Saturday at Rosehill.

Second elect Dothraki won the start and took up the lead, while favourite Sidestep was fourth. Into the straight Dothraki skipped away and held a good lead of more than two lengths from Good Job Bro and Sidestep. But it was Sidestep who lifted down the outside and with 100m to go surged past Dothraki to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Fuerza finished third with Diamond Oasis fourth.

On whether Sidestep will go to the Golden Slipper, Darley trainer Peter Snowden said,

“It sounds the obvious choice to do, to go the Golden Slipper next week but we’ve got to think about the longevity of the horse as well and see how he pulls up. It wasn’t our desire to run this week.”

“He’s still immature, he’s still new, he still does things wrong, which is a bit of a concern. I still think he wants headgear on him to make him concentrate

“He’s deadset got good true ability, and whether it’s going to come next week or whether it’s later on we’ll have to have a good talk about it,” Snowden added.

A decision on whether Sidestep joins his stablemates in the Golden Slipper will be made early next week.

“The exciting thing about him is he’s done that a bit half-hearted today, we took the winkers off and he was quite new from the 600m on I had to ask him to sort of stay up behind Hughy’s horse [Dothraki] and then he was a bit new in the straight until he got a couple of back-hands behind the bum so he’s going to switch on and we’ll talk about what we do with him during the week,” jockey Kerrin McEvoy said after the race.
