Havana Rey leads all the way to win the Ajax Stakes 2013

Havana Rey has lead from start to finish to win the Group 2 Ajax Stakes at Rosehill Gardens.

The Bjorn Baker trained Havana Rey was impressive in front, and held on from a strong finishing Riva De Lago to win by 1 length. Monton was 1/2 head away in third with Lightinthenite fourth.

Race favourite Carlton House, the first horse trained in Australia for Her Majesty The Queen, missed the start and was last out. Havana Rey took up the lead straight away from Monton.

Havana Rey dictated the race in front and came into the home turn well ahead of Monton. Riva De Lago put a good fight to run on down the outside, but Havana Rey was too good and ended up winning easily in the end.

Bjorn Baker admitted that wasn’t sure about running Havana Rey in the Ajax Stakes.

“He only galloped very very average on Tuesday so I was debating whether we would come here,” Baker said after the race.

“He was either going to lead or be outside the lead, I said to Glyn [Schofield] that I didn’t really want to lead but he knows the horse better than me and it worked out perfectly.

Baker releavled that Havana Rey has been a special horse for him.

“He’s the first city winner, first Saturday winner, I think he’s won 5 saturday races and I guess my first group winner in Sydney in my own right.”
