If the betting market is anything to go by, the Group 3 2013 Epona Stakes (1900m) is set to be a closely run affair.
Current favourite is Ron Quinton’s consistent mare Crafty Irna who is being offered at $4.80 at bookmaker.com.au.
The five-year-old has only won four times from 28 starts but has placed on another 10 occasions and seems to be getting better with age.
She is fresh off a runner-up finish in the Aspiration Quality and in the spring won the Listed Tatt’s Cup and finished in the minor placings twice at Group level.
Second in the betting and market mover is 2012 Australian Oaks runner-up Aliyana Tilde ($5.50) who finished third in the Aspiration Quality to fellow Epona Stakes runner Thy ($7).
Trained by Peter Moody, Thy is a four-year-old who has shown an ability to perform in all conditions, having won on both good and heavy tracks.
The O’Reilly mare has shown plenty of potential in her young career, winning three times and placing another three from 10 starts.
Tim Martin’s mare Fibrillation returns to defend the race she won last year and is an $8 betting chance.
At $8.50 is Ominous Quality who was fourth in the Aspiration Quality and ran fifth in the Group 3 Millie Fox Stakes the start before.
Also under double figures is emerging Darley-owned mare Sindarin ($9) who has won three of 15 starts but has finished in the top three at her past two starts.
Her staying ability was on show earlier this month when she ran a bold third to Coliseo in the Listed Canberra Cup (2000m).
Lightly-raced mare Epingle ($10) will appreciate a step up in distance after running sixth in the Group 3 Schweppervescence (1600m) earlier this month while Shamardani ($11) will be out to bounce back from a last-start seventh.
