One of 18 smart gallopers engaged in this year’s edition of the $175,000 Group 2 Hyland Race Colours Ajax Stakes (1500m), King Cugat gelding Havana Rey has won seven of their 20 starts to date but has seen stakes company just once before.

They were only stepped up to black type class last time out on March 9 when they ran a credible fifth beaten under two lengths by the successful defending champ Shoot Out in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).

They drop back in class and distance here and will also relish coming back from 59kg in the Chipping Norton to just 54.5kg on Saturday with Glyn Schofield replacing Peter Robl in the saddle.

Schofield has plenty of experience on the up-and-comer too having ridden them to back-to-back wins leading into the Chipping Norton at Warwick Farm both over 1600m.

With their nice lead-up form Havana Rey is well fancied in the Ajax Stakes odds paying $6 to overcome their double digit barrier (12) and win.

There are then four other horses under double figures in the Ajax Stakes betting markets with:

  • #11 Lightinthenite ($7) – John O’Shea-trained Galielo gelding resumes here having last run sixth in a Group 3 over 2600m at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day, winner of the David Jones Cup last spring, likely wanting more distance but was a very close second in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap over the 1500m at Newcastle first-up last time in
  • #1 Carlton House ($9) – Nice barrier three draw for the 59kg top-weight, owned by the Queen and now prepared by Gai Waterhouse in Sydney, the Street Cry stallion last seen running sixth in the Hong Kong Cup boasting plenty of Group 1 experience including their second to the now-retired Aussie expat So You Think in last June’s Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Ascot
  • #9 Riva De Lago ($9) – Chris Waller-trained son of Encosta De Lago has been in ace form this time in with back-to-back Rosehill wins over 1400m earlier by impressive margins before their close second to Skyerush in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Warwick Farm on March 9, will love getting back to Rosehill with 55kg and Corey Brown riding
  • #Famous Seamus ($9) – Elusive City gelding last seen running third in the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap, consistent record around the 1400m and likes Rosehill, handles all conditions and is a stakes winner with progression in them

Other longer priced contenders that could prove the value bet of Rosehill Guineas Day then include the Ron Quinton-trained Chipping Norton Stakes runner-up Monton ($13), Liverpool City Cup winner Skyerush ($13) with the inside alley and Waller’s European import Beaten Up also at $13 for their debut run down under from a nice barrier 7 draw on 54kg.
