Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Multiple Group 1 winner Ortensia will bypass this weekend’s Group 1 2013 Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill and will instead take on Black Caviar in the Group 1 2013 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 13.
The seven-year-old starred in a gruelling overseas campaign last year to win Group 1 races in Dubai and the UK but has thus far failed to replicate that form this campaign.
The Paul Messara-trained mare finished 11th in the Oakleigh Plate before being beaten by 10 lengths when 12th in the Newmarket Handicap.
Despite being seven and nearing the end of her career, Messara rejected claims earlier this month his stable star can no longer perform as a racehorse.
“Ortensia has come through Newmarket without harm. She will return to Sydney to race. She still wants to be a racehorse,” Messara said.
“The day Ortensia has had enough, she will be retired. But that day has not come. Excessive interference last sat [in the Newmarket] was the only difference.”
Ortensia has won 13 of 37 starts and collected in excess of $2 million in prizemoney.
Her absence won’t have too great an impact on the quality of the Galaxy field, with plenty of strong sprinters contesting the race in an effort to dodge Black Caviar.
The Galaxy is likely to see all-star sprinter Hay List continue his comeback trail from injury after running fourth in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes on March 16.
Winner on that day was three-year-old filly Snitzerland who will attempt to claim her first Group 1 win this weekend.
Challenge Stakes minor placegetters Howmuchdoyouloveme and Decision Time will also run in the Galaxy.
