Rounding out the action of Rosehill Guineas Day as Race 9 at 5:45pm (AEST) this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Ascend Sales Trophies Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) has drawn a final field of 14 runners, the top-rated and weighted of which is Ladys Angel.

The multiple stakes winning Joe Pride-trained Arena six-year-old is four runs into their autumn prep with their most recent run being a third in the Wenona Girl Handicap at Warwick Farm on March 16 when carrying 59kg.

She has 58kg this weekend but must overcome a double-digit gate (11) with Michael Rodd replacing James McDonald in the saddle, Ladys Angel looking to get back to her ace form from this time last year when third in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).

Following Ladys Angel in the Birthday Card Stakes field and weights are then Gai Waterhouse’s Miss Stellabelle (56.5kg) looking to bounce back after a first-up eighth in the Wenona Girl, and the Colin Little-trained Soft Sand (56kg) who will be ridden by Craig Williams for her resuming run.

Dansili four-year-old Soft Sand, a winner of four of her 12 starts to date, races for the first time since her close second to Appearance in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington back in early November.

Adding to the form of that run was the third-up run of Appearance this time in when they scored another Group 1 title this time in the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill last Saturday.

Other notable first-up runners in the Birthday Card Stakes mix include the Peter Snowden-trained Commands four-year-old Altar and Guy Walter’s rails-drawn Brightest last seen crossing second in the Summer Cup over the mile and a half on Boxing Day at Rosehill.

There are two last start winners engaged this year with the Chris Waller-trained stablemates Arinosa,  winner of the Wenona Girl first-up, and three-year-old Dubawi filly Catkins coming off a first-up stakes win here on March 2 in the mud – the duo having mixed luck in the barrier draw with gates 14 and 2 respectively.

Other hopefuls coming off good recent runs include Wenona Girl runner-up Choice Words who earlier ran third to Steps In Time in the Group 2 NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Classic, and the Robert Smerdon-trained Shamal Wind coming off a close third in the Group 2 Centrebet Classic (1200m) at Morphettville.
