Assail Tops 2013 Magic Night Stakes Field

Clarry Conners-trained filly Assail heads a 13-horse field for the Group 2 2013 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The $175,000 provides Assail, and the other runners in the field, a final chance to qualify for Saturday week’s $3.5 million 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m).

Assail was considered among the early Golden Slipper contenders but is now in a must-win position after bungling the start and finishing sixth when an odds-on favourite in the Sweet Embrace Stakes.

“She has to win, it’s as simple as that,” Conners said.

The Charge Forward filly has drawn well in barrier six and will be ridden by top jockey Craig Williams.

Coming into the race off strong Sweet Embrace Stakes performances are Thump and Greytfilly who finished off well to claim the minor placings behind Romantic Moon.

Greytfilly is one of three Gai Waterhouse-trained horses in the field, joined by Shahad and Major Conquest.

The only last-start winner in the field is Anthony Cummings-trained filly Scandiva who arrives in the race on the back of a mid-week win at Warwick Farm on March 21.

Making their Sydney debut is Sense Of Hite who was second in her only career start in the Listed Sportingbet Stakes at Morphetville earlier this month.

Paul Messara has accepted with Vocalise who won on debut in February before finishing fourth in the Sweet Embrace Stakes.

Stepping out for Darley is Itameri who hasn’t been seen since November when she was a narrow second at Moonee Valley.

Also resuming off a break is Robert Davies’ Madame Fly who won at Warwick Farm in December.

Others in the field include Peter Moody-trained filly Brilliant Bisc and David Hayes’ Group 3 runner-up Bulbula.
