2013 Pago Pago Stakes Field Released

The final fields for all the Easter Saturday races on Rosehill Guineas Day in Sydney this weekend have now been released including those for one of the final Golden Slipper lead-ups, the Pago Pago Stakes 2013.

Set to run as Rosehill Gardens Race 4 at 2:10pm (AEST) this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Bowermans Office Furniture Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) originally attracted a final field of 11 two-year-old colts and geldings.

The field is now down to 10 however following the early scratching of Gerald Ryan’s unraced Zaba Zaba Doo.

Of the 10 remaining hopefuls only a few are still being seriously considered for a shot at the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) back at the track Saturday week, the Pago Pago Stakes winner exempt from ballot for the world’s richest juvenile’s race.

Following the non-acceptance of top Slipper hopeful I’m All The Talk the new shortest-priced Pago Pago runner in the Golden Slipper odds is Sidestep at $26.

The Peter Snowden-trained Exceed And Excel colt debuted with a third in a Sandown black type in November before coming back on March 10 to come within half a length when second to $10 Golden Slipper second fancy Criterion in the Black Opal Stakes.

They lost their rider in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) last Saturday however and missed that crucial lead-up, hence their acceptance this weekend.

A number of the top Pago Pago Stakes meanwhile come via a run behind I’m All The Talk in the Group 3 Skyline Stakes (1200m) on March 16 including Gerald Ryan’s Mossman colt Dothraki (3rd) and the Bjorn Baker-trained son of Snippetson Fuerza (4th).

Other notable hopes in the mix on Saturday include Skyline fifth placed Good Job Bro, the rails-drawn Flak Jacket and the John O’Shea-trained Diamond Oasis in gate four with James McDonald to ride as they come off a win on debut at Gosford.
