2013 Ajax Stakes Field & Barriers Announced

A bumper final field of 18 gallopers has been accepted for the Ajax Stakes 2013 at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday, a number of which are heading towards one of the richest races at the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival – the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 20.

There were a number of notable non-acceptors for the $175,000 Group 2 Hyland Race Colours Ajax Stakes (1500m) this weekend including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Proisir who is the current $7 second pick in the futures Doncaster Mile odds.

Waterhouse will still be represented in the 2013 Ajax Stakes field however by the race’s 59kg topweight Carlton House who has come up trumps with barrier three – Hugh Bowman to ride the Queen’s horse for their debut run down under.

The Street Cry stallion, formerly prepared in Newmarket by Sir Michael Stoute, Carlton House was last seen running sixth in the Hong Kong Cup in December and is looking for their first win since the Group 3 win at Sandown Park in Britain last May.

There are two last-start winners engaged in the Ajax Stakes meanwhile with the Guy Walter-trained Skyerush and Centennial Park who have drawn at opposite ends of the field with barriers one and 16 respectively.

Seven-year-old Super Jet mare Skyerush resumed on March 9 with a close win in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Warwick Farm, last year’s Myer Classic fourth place-getter vying for another autumn triumph to add to her record.

The David Payne-trained fellow seven-year-old Centennial Park meanwhile was last seen enjoying a win three runs in when beating home Star Of Giselle in the Listed Super Saturday Stakes (1400m) at Flemington three weeks ago.

Some other horses coming off some nice recent form then include the Ron Quinton-trained Monton who was only just nudged out of the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes title by Shoot Out, Chris Waller’s Liverpool City Cup runner-up Riva De Lago who won back-to-back races at Rosehill before that, and the Bjorn Baker-trained four-year-old Havana Rey to be ridden by Glyn Schofield as they look to improve on their Chipping Norton fifth.

Other notable hopes then include Waller’s The Metropolitan Stakes fourth placed Stout Hearted, Elusive City four-year-old Famous Seamus, Strike The Stars and Peter Moody’s resuming import Voila Ici in gate two with Luke Nolen aboard.

See below for the full Ajax Stakes 2013 field, barriers, jockeys and weights.

When it comes to enjoying an Easter Saturday punt on the ponies make sure you don’t settle for second best.
