Two Moons Top Sydney Cup Weights 2013

Weights for the highly-anticipated 2013 Sydney Cup were released by Racing NSW this week with reigning Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon and fellow imported stablemate Sea Mooninstalled as the 59kg co-top weights but both unlikely to run.

There are currently 70 early entries for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) due to run at the end of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival at Royal Randwick on April 27.

Owner Lloyd Williams’ head trainer Robert Hickmott is in with four of the top five heaviest weighted entries most notably Green Moon.

Winner of the world’s richest handicap during the spring the Montjeu six-year-old has had two runs this time in when fourth in both the Futurity Stakes behind crack colt All Too Hard and then fourth again behind another exciting young gun, Super Cool, in the Australian Cup at Flemington on March 9 but aren’t likely to continue onto the Sydney Cup.

Their stablemate Sea Moon meanwhile is rated a $12 chance in the latest Sydney Cup odds despite their hefty weight allocation and news they too are set to miss the clash.

A dual Group 1 minor place-getter in Europe the Beat Hollow stallion hasn’t raced since their eighth to Solemia in the Prix de L’Arc Triomphe in October at Longchamp with a first-up run down under still to be confirmed.

Hickmott’s two other Sydney Cup chances are then Sandown Classic winner Tanby (56kg) who caught the eye when third in the Australian Cup on March 9 and who is paying $13 to win, and seven-year-old Mourayan (55.5kg).

Sandwiched between all the Hickmott-trained hopes with 57kg is then exciting Kiwi raider Sangster with 57kg.

The horse is currently paying $10 as the co-second favourite in the Sydney Cup markets along with fellow New Zealand-trained Randwick Guineas winner It’s A Dundeel (54kg) whose grand final is more likely to be the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) two weeks earlier.

Winner of the 2011 Victoria Derby Savabeel four-year-old Sangster travelled to Sydney last Saturday for the Ranvet Stakes where they finished a disappointing seventh to upset winner Foreteller.

They did however win the Auckland Cup back in the native NZ over the 3200m on March 6 and are considered a good chance on improving on their Ranvet form when getting back up in distance for the Cup next month.

Should Green Moon and Sea Moon both defect Sydney Cup weights will need to be raised at least one kilogram with Sangster to then wear the No. 1 saddlecloth.

The defending Sydney Cup winner Niwot meanwhile has 55.5kg, the same as their winning weight last autumn after weighs were raised at final acceptance stage, and pays $15 to go back-to-back in the two mile showdown, an equal price with Gai Waterhouse’s Geelong Cup winner Gatewood (53.5kg).

Niwot’s trainers Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes also prepare the current Sydney Cup betting favourite Maluckyday (54kg), the 2010 Melbourne Cup runner-up paying $7 on the back of their Ranvet Stakes third.

Other horses high up the futures Sydney Cup odds and their weight allocations then include Waterhouse’s Sky High Stakes winner at Rosehill last weekend Julienas ($11 / 53.5kg), the Chris Waller-trained Kelinni ($11 / 54.5kg) and the lightly-raced Hathras ($13 / 52kg).
