This Saturday’s 2013 The Galaxy is looking an unlikely next-up target for John McNair’s great galloper Hay List after they were allocated the 59.5kg top-weight for the Rosehill Gardens showdown.
Of the 25 nominees for this year’s edition of the $350,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), triple Group 1 winning Statue Of Liberty seven-year-old Hay List was handed the heaviest weight with 59.5kg.
Earlier this week McNair indicated he was likely to bypass The Galaxy second-up for Hay List, who resumed with a first-up fourth in the Challenge Stakes, should they receive that weight.
Should they miss the race it is unclear whether Hay List will be given another run leading into a clash with the superlative Black Caviar in the $1 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on April 13.
Following Hay List in the 2013 The Galaxy weights on 56kg is then the John O’Shea-trained Sea Siren.
The talented Fastnet Rock mare, like Hay List, is a three time elite level winner and should connections opt to run her on Saturday she will be having her first run since a disappointing ninth in her overseas debut in the Hong Kong Sprint last December.
The next heaviest weighted hopefuls are then Paul Messara’s globetrotting mare Ortensia (55.5kg) who has failed to win a race since the Nunthrope in Great Britain last August, the Clarry Conners-trained Decision Time (55kg) coming off a second in the Challenge Stakes, and the defending The Galaxy winner Temple Of Boom (55.5kg) who carried 57kg to victory last year.
The 2011 The Galaxy champ Atomic Force is also nominated for this year’s edition and has been allocated 53.5kg which is two kilos more than the weight they carried to victory two years ago and equal with five other horses including Gerald Ryan’s flying Snitzel filly Snitzerland.
Snitzerland was the easy winner of the Challenge Stakes on March 16 beating a number of others in this field under weight-for-age conditions with 54kg and Corey Brown aboard.
Other notable hopefuls in the mix getting into the race on a nice weight then include the Gerald Ryan-trained Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis (52.5kg), Peter Moody’s Lightning Stakes third placed Golden Archer (52.5kg), Queensland galloper Adebisi (52kg) and the Joe Pride-trained last start stakes winner at the track and distance See The World (52kg).
