Talented filly Assail must win Saturday’s Group 2 2013 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill if she is to earn the right to race against the country’s best two-year-olds in Saturday week’s 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m).
The Charge Forward filly is currently 28th in the Slipper order of entry, with only a victory enough to ensure her place in the $3.5 million glamour race.
Assail has collected $212,000 in stakes for connections but only $50,000 counts towards her Slipper position as she won most of that in Magic Millions restricted races.
It is Clarry Conners’ second attempt to qualify his young charge after she was beaten as an odds-on favourite in the Sweet Embrace Stakes last Saturday week.
On that occasion Assail missed the start and never really recovered.
Peter Robl has been the jockey of choice so far but Conners has looked to Craig Williams for the last-gasp Slipper tilt.
“Craig Williams was available. I think he’s the best rider in Australia so I’ve put him on,” Conners said.
Conners attributed the last-start failure to the bungled start and getting caught in an awkward position.
Prior to injury seeing the two-year-old scratched from the Magic Millions Classic on race day at the Gold Coast, she had shown impressive form to score back-to-back wins.
Plenty of trainers are making a last-ditch effort to gain Golden Slipper qualificaiton, with 19 horses entered for the Magic Night Stakes and 17 for the Pago Pago Stakes for colts and geldings.
Among the Magic Night contenders are Sweet Embrace Stakes minor placegetters Thump and Greytfilly.
