Maluckyday Early 2013 Sydney Cup Favourite – Betting Odds

Former Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday is the early favourite to win the Group 1 2013 Sydney Cup (3200m) which will take place at Randwick on April 27.

The team Hawkes-trained gelding is a $7 chance at bookmaker.com.au despite having not won since the 2010 Lexus, the same campaign in which he finished second to Americain in Australia’s biggest race.

But the six-year-old has shown signs his racing days are far from over, running home strongly on Saturday to finish third in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill.

Sharing the second line of Sydney Cup betting at $10 are New Zealand gallopers It’s A Dundeel and Sangster.

Three-year-old It’s A Dundeel won the Randwick Guineas earlier this month and will start a short favourite when he chases his third Group 1 win in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) this Saturday.

Sangster was seventh in the Ranvet Stakes on Saturday after arriving in Australia on the back three consecutive wins including in the Group 1 Auckland Cup.

Imports have dominated Australian staying races in recent times and Julienas and Kelinni are both considered $11 chances.

Chris Waller-trained gelding Kelinni was fourth in last year’s Melbourne Cup but has been unable to fire in three autumn starts so far.

Gai Waterhouse was quick to define Julienas as a Sydney Cup contender after he scored a two-length win in the Listed Sky High Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Progressive entire Hathras ($13) has impressed since joining Kris Lees‘ team, winning his past two starts in Sydney.

There was plenty of hype for OTI-owned import Gatewood ($15) after he won last year’s Geelong Cup but he has finished unplaced in both the Chipping Norton Stakes and the Ranvet Stakes to begin his autumn.

Defending champion Niwot ($15) is being set on a path towards back-to-back Sydney Cups but also struggled in the Ranvet, finishing in eighth place.

Other potential Sydney Cup runners include Mourayan ($17), Permit ($21) and Lunayir ($26).

There has never been a better time to join the Australian-owned bookie who are offering a huge $400 bonus bet to new customers.
