A total of 16 gallopers were entered for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m), one of two Group races on the Caulfield card this Easter Saturday.

David Hayes’ imported Cape Cross stallion Jet Away is the top nominee this year after a nice one and a quarter length win in the Golden Mile on March 16 in their Australian debut and first run since a second in the Group 3 Lancaster Stakes (2100m) at Haydock Park back in August.

Having carried 54.5kg to victory in their Aussie debut in the Golden Mile on Saturday Jet Away rises to 57kg – the second heaviest weight of the Easter Cup nominations.

The top-rated and weighted hopeful with 59kg meanwhile is Michael Moroney’s Kiwi expat Wall Street, winner of the 2010 Emirates Stakes.

The ageing Montjeu eight-year-old hasn’t won a race since the Emirates three years ago however and was last seen running fourth to Jet Away in the Golden Mile.

Golden Miler runner-up Zabisco is also nominated for the Easter Cup, the fellow Moroney-trained Zabeel five-year-old looking to go close again having run well from gate 12 of 12 there off a five week freshen-up.

Along with Jet Away the other last-start winners among the early entries are then the fellow Hayes-trained Whisper Downs coming off a win at the track and distance from last Saturday, the Danny O’Brien-trained Keep Cool and four-year-old Spartacus mare Hula Lua who has been scratched from their three March runs due to track conditions.

Other notable Easter Cup 2013 nominees include last start Blamey Stakes fourth placegetter Callanish and Mourinho.

Peter Gelagotis will start Mourinho on the weekend after scratching the Oratorio five-year-old from the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill last Saturday hoping to get a gauge of their chances in the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens Saturday week – Golden Slipper Day.

“He stiffened up after some work during the week and we just couldn’t take the risk travelling him,” Gelagotis said regarding the Ranvet withdrawal.

Mourinho is currently rated a $61 chance in The BMW odds which are led by last year’s Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar ($4).

The full 2013 Easter Cup nominations are detailed below with final acceptances and gates to be released on Wednesday.
