After resuming with a credible effort against a similar field two weeks back, Decision Time is geared up and ready to go for their first Group 1 assignment in nearly three years, trainer Clarry Conners confident they will be competitive again in The Galaxy 2013 at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.
Foreplay gelding Decision Time hasn’t raced against Group 1 company since their close fourth to Toorak Toff in the 2010 Golden Rose during that year’s Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, after which they went on to win the Heritage Stakes – Stan Fox Stakes double as a three-year-old before a bleeding attack saw him automatically banned for three months.
It has been a tough couple of years for the now five-year-old who has been plagued by injury and setbacks, the last lot of which saw them spend nearly one and a half years out of action.
Decision Time resumed off that lengthy break at Warwick Farm on March 16 however and was far from disgraced when finishing three lengths away second to Gerald Ryan’s smart Snitzel filly Snitzerland in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) when she set a new track record.
“He ran a great race in the Challenge after such a long time off,” Conners said.
“With a horse like him it is always a worry.
“You have to train them differently and not put too much pressure on them.
“But I’m just happy to have him back.”
They get the chance to turn the tables on Snitzerland this Saturday when they go second-up into the $350,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), Conners hoping they can produce another slashing run with James McDonald maintaining his association with the horse.
Also nominated for The Galaxy on the weekend are Challenge Stakes third place-getter Howmuchdoyouloveme and fourth placed Hay List, also returning off an injury-enforced spell, who are allocated 53.5kg and 59.5kg respectively.
“He’d been sidelined longer than Hay List but they all wanted to talk about him,” Conners added speaking about Decision Time’s Challenge Stakes return.
“That’s OK with me. He’s done super since and everything is fine which is a relief.”
In the Challenge Stakes Decision Time carried a hefty 58.5kg giving 4.5k kilos to the winner Snitzerland.
On Saturday the weights look far more in their favour however with Decision Time allocated 55kg and Snitzerland on 53.5kg.
John McNair’s champion sprinter Hay List meanwhile will likely bypass the race because of their big top-weight.
The 2013 The Galaxy final field and acceptances for all the Easter Saturday races on Rosehill Guineas Day this weekend are due for release tomorrow.
