Clarry Conners’ last-start Coolmore Classic failure Dear Demi has seemingly been forgiven by the bookies and installed at the top of the markets for the 2013 Australian Oaks at Royal Randwick next month.
Winner of the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) in Melbourne last spring the three-year-old daughter of Dehere enjoyed two good first-up runs this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The first was a third to Bennetta in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill before they beat home Driefontein in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on March 9.
Something went amiss last Saturday however when Dear Demi jumped one of the top fancies in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill only to finish five lengths away 11th to the winner Appearance.
At this stage it is still all systems go towards the $550,000 Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick on Doncaster Mile Day, April 20, however with Dear Demi tipped to improve as she gets more distance.
In the latest Australian Oaks odds she pays $4 just ahead of the $4.60 second elect Habibi.
Donna & Dean Logan’s Ekraar filly Habibi is yet to race in Australia with all seven of her starts so far being at home in New Zealand where she has enjoyed six victories.
At her latest run the promising youngster beat home the boys over the 2400m of the Group 1 NZ Derby on March 2 earning her a shot at the autumn riches across the Tasman.
There is then just one other filly under double-figures to take out the ATC Oaks title in 2013 with Bart Cummings-trained Norzita paying $6.
The Thorn Park filly was a Group 1 spring winner in Sydney’s Flight Stakes over the Randwick mile and has been in similarly impressive form this time in.
After a first-up black type success at Moonee Valley in February Norzita ran second to Flying Snitzel in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington before her brave third when defeated only a long neck in the Coolmore Classic.
Other top fancies in the early markets then include Nigel Blackiston’s Savabeel filly You’re So Good ($11) who backed up from her excellent second to Ferlax in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) to win the Listed Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley, Alexandra Stakes third placed Summerbliss ($14) who was also third in the Crown Oaks back in November, recent Kewney Stakes winner Flying Snitzel ($15) and Peter Snowden’s Keith Nolan Classic champ last Sunday Cameo ($16).
