Carlton House Heads Ajax Stakes 2013 Weights

The Queen of England’s horse Carlton House, now prepared in Sydney by Ms Gai Waterhouse, has been allocated the top-weight for this Saturday’s 2013 Ajax Stakes at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

There were 27 official nominations taken for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m), a nice lead-up race to the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 20.

One 2013 Doncaster Mile hope is Street Cry stallion Carlton House who makes their Australian race debut in the Ajax.

A dual Group winner back in England the five-year-old also boasts three strong Group 1 runs including a second to So You Think in the 2012 Prince Of Wales Stakes at Ascot and their most recent start, a fourth to Excelebration in the Champions Mile on October 20 last year.

Waterhouse is thrilled to prepare Carlton House and is hoping they can win first-up for connections in the Ajax despite their hefty 59kg top-weight allocation.

Waterhouse also prepares the likely Ajax Stakes betting favourite Proisir who has been allocated 56kg.

The talented Choisir colt has had two runs this time when third to star stablemate Pierro in the Hobartville and then their brave second to It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Warwick Farm on March 16 when carrying 56.5kg under the set weights conditions.

Following Carlton House in the Ajax Stakes weights meanwhile are then three horses on 58.5kg with Budgriguez, Lamasery and Voila Ici.

David Jolly’s smart Adelaide raider Budriguez comes off a dead-heat win with Melbourne Cup 2013 favourite Puissance De Lune in the Blamey Stakes and is also nominated for the $150,000 Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

The David Vandyke-trained Lamasery is first-up here not having raced since their fifth to Glencadam Gold in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick last October, while Peter Moody’s imported stayer Voila Ici also resumes in the Ajax after being scratched from the Newcastle Newmarket Handicap earlier in the month.

Other notable Ajax Stakes nominees and their weight allocation then include Chipping Norton Stakes runner-up Monton (57.5kg), last start Liverpool City Cup winning mare Skyerush (57kg), the David Payne-trained Centennial Park (55.5kg) coming off a black type win at Flemington, and Randwick Guineas fourth placed Rebel Dane (55kg) who earlier won the Royal Sovereign Stakes at Rosehill.
