Hay List Weighting on The Galaxy 2013

One of two Group 1 features on the Rosehill Guineas Day program this weekend the $350,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) has been named as a target by a number of exciting horses including the John McNair-trained Hay List.

The triple Group 1 winning son of Statue Of Liberty returned after an injury and sickness enforced year-long break from racing on March 16 when they finished fourth to Snitzerland in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m).

Last autumn Hay List enjoyed great success when winner of the Newmarket Handicap second-up and McNair is hoping that they will be at their peak two runs in again this season.

There is a chance the seven-year-old will be weighted out of The Galaxy contention however when the weights for the handicap clash are announced on Tuesday with Hay List looking at 60kg, a big weight two runs back for the injury-prone champ.

“I don’t understand why they have a handicap as the lead-in to the major sprint of the carnival,” McNair said.

“If he gets more than 60 kilos he won’t run.

“The Challenge Stakes used to be two weeks before the TJ.”

Hay List’s major autumn aim is the $1 million Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on April 13, which is also being considered for the undefeated turf queen Black Caviar who took her record to an incredible 14 Group 1 victories in last Friday night’s William Reid Stakes.

Following the 2013 TJ Smith Stakes McNair said a projected cash boost to the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), currently worth $400,000, on Sydney Cup Day a fortnight later then they would back the horse up there.

“We will look at all options including the Goodwood in Adelaide but if they get the million dollars for the All Aged then we can go there,” he said.

The $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) meanwhile runs at Morphettville Racecourse on May 11.

2013 The Galaxy nominations close shortly and will be published right here at Races.com.au so stay tuned.

One horse confirmed for a The Galaxy start meanwhile is Challenge Stakes winner Snitzerland while Queensland trainer Desleigh Forster will also take Adebisi into the feature on the back of an Oakleigh Plate fifth back on February 23.
