A number of leading chances in next month’s Doncaster Mile will race at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday in the Ajax Stakes 2013 including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Proisir.
One of the traditional lead-up races to the famous $2
million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap
(1600m) run this year at Royal Randwick
on April 20, this weekend’s $175,000 Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) has attracted a stellar list of 27 nominations.
The best fancied of the Ajax Stakes entries in the futures Doncaster Mile odds is
progressive Choisir colt Proisir at
$7, second only to their superlative stablemate Pierro at $2.75 who won the
Group 1 Canterbury Stakes last Saturday over another Waterhouse-trained Group 1
champ More Joyous.
The three-year-old has had two runs this time in firstly
when third to Rebel Dane in the wet for the Hobartville Stakes and then on
March 16 when a close second behind superstar It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1
Randwick Guineas (1600m).
Waterhouse has also nominated for her imported Street Cry
stallion Carlton House in the Ajax
Stakes this weekend who is currently rated a $61 Doncaster chance, the
five-year-old to make their Aussie debut having last raced at Royal Ascot back
“I am very honoured to be training the Queen’s horse,
Carlton House, who ran third in the Derby in the UK,” Waterhouse wrote in the Daily Telegraph last week.
“He is an outstanding type, albeit with some old hoof
“I can’t tell you how much I hope he wins.”
The next shortest-priced of the Ajax Stakes hopefuls in the Doncaster Mile betting markets is then
$16 chance Rebel Dane.
California Dane three-year-old enjoyed a six straight winning streak to start
their career including a Royal Sovereign Stakes victory before their second to
Pierro in the Hobartville.
They were last seen running fourth in the Randwick Guineas.
Other notable Doncaster Mile bound gallopers entered for the
Ajax then include the Ron Quinton-trained
Monton coming off a brave second to
Shoot Out in the Chipping Norton Stakes, resuming Commands six-year-old Lamasery and Newcastle Newmarket
Handicap minor placegetter Famous Seamus.
Also in the mix are then the likes of dead heat Blamey
Stakes winner Budriguez, recent
Flemington winner Centennial Park,
Guy Walter’s veteran mare Skyerush coming
off Group 2 Liverpool City Cup victory and Liverpool runner-up Riva De Lago.
