Toydini Flies Home to Win 2013 Phar Lap Stakes

A gelding operation has paid off for Toydini who delivered a sparkling finish to claim the Group 2 2013 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill today.

As a colt the Guy Walter-trained galloper produced sporadic results but in just his second start as a gelding he showed an electric turn of foot and signalled potential for bigger things to come.

Coming from the back of the field the son of Bernadini was electric to run over the top of Ninth Legion who claimed runner-up honours ahead of Force Command in third.

Walter has always known the three-year-old possessed talent but said he didn’t always show it as a colt.

“He showed a nice turn of foot which he always had,” Walter said.

“We felt as a colt he wasn’t quite producing his best…all the sings are good.”

Toydini was running second-up today and there are bigger races in store, with Walter suggesting he may get a chance at Group 1 level in the 2013 Queensland Derby.

Jockey Blake Shinn has ridden the improving horse both as a colt and as a gelding and he said the difference is remarkable.

“He’s shown so much potential. The owners took a bit of persuading to geld him but now they’ve got a really promising racehorse,” Shinn said.

“I’m sure he’s going to go to really big heights this horse.

“Mentally he’s so much calmer [than as a colt] at trackwork. He really wants to be  a racehorse. You’re always a bit sceptial until they perform on race day but he really attacked the line today.”
