Pierro Wins 2013 Canterbury Stakes – Rosehill Results

Glamour colt Pierro further confirmed his superstar status when defeating a hot field in the Group 1 2013 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill today.

The three-year-old was positioned perfectly behind the lead of Rain Affair by Jim Cassidy before being peeled out at the top of the straight.

From that point there only looked to be one winner as the son of Lonhro powered through the line to claim a one-length victory from stablemate More Joyous and Queenslander Solzhenitsyn.

It was a bold move from connections to take on the older horses instead of “easy kills” in his own age group but he was never challenged in a field that contained six other Group 1 winners.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse has never held back in her praise of Pierro and she was exuberant when describing his latest conquest.

“What an outstanding, outstanding colt,” Waterhouse said.

“The way he just digs so deep. Such a courageous effort. Nothing to be taken away from the mare [More Joyous]. She tenaciously went to the post but Pierro was too brilliant on the day.”

Veteran rider Jim Cassidy was aboard the star three-year-old for the first time on race day and he was even more extravagant in his praise, suggesting he is better than the legendary Might And Power at the same age.

“I’ve been lucky enough in a great career to ride some great horses. But I must say, putting your leg over this bloke, he’s a freak,” Cassidy said.

“I put this bloke above him [Might And Power] at this stage.

“I don’t like using the word freely but he’s a champion…the sky’s the limit for him. Bring on All Too Hard bring on whatever you like, he’ll deal with them.”

Pierro has now won 10 of 12 starts, including four times at Group 1 level, and collected more than $3.85 million in prizemoney.
