Golden Slipper Favourite Overreach Wins 2013 Moet and Chandon Stakes

Gai Waterhouse is in the box seat to claim a second straight Golden Slipper title after Overreach confirmed she will be a short-priced favourite with a strong win in the Group 2 2013 Moet and Chandon Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill today.

The talented filly was beaten by Villa Verde on debut in October but easily turned the tables today, defeating the Victorian grey by four lengths.

The Exceed and Excel filly jumped cleanly from barrier five, quickly assuming the lead.

That is where she stayed.

Jockey Tommy Berry made her do some work early but she responded impressively and justified her $1.45 starting price.

No horse came close today and she now heads into the Golden Slipper as the clear top pick after also winning the Widden Stakes by six lengths last month.

Waterhouse said it is tough to split her three chances in next month’s $3.5 million sprint but hinted that Overreach is the pick of the bunch.

“She certainly made the punters that backed her today and the ones that will back her on Slipper day say ‘we’ve got a very special filly,” Waterhouse said.

“I’m very lucky to have three chances in the Slipper and I don’t think there is much between them but at present she’ll be the short-priced favourite.”

Jockey Tommy Berry is a near certainty to retain the prized ride for the big day and, in an ominous warning to her rivals, believes the filly still has improvement to come.

“She had quite a good blow. I was surprised to see how much of a blow she had,” Berry said.

“I think she’s still quite new to it all.”
