Criterion Continues March to Slipper With 2013 Todman Stakes Win

David Payne-trained colt Criterion continued his impressive form on the way to the 2013 Golden Slipper with a strong win in the Group 2 2013 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill today.

The addition of blinkers worked a treat at Canberra earlier this month when he won the Black Opal Stakes and they also kept the son of Sebring sharp for today’s contest.

Never a quick starter, Criterion was ridden slightly worse than mid-field by experienced jockey Craig Williams as Charlie Boy and Whiskey Allround set the pace up front.

The race was set up nicely for the swoopers and it was the now winner of three of four starts who proved the strongest in the finish to defeat Fast ‘N’ Rocking and Havana.

Payne the addition of blinkers had worked to switch Criterion on and is confident he still has improvement heading towards the Slipper.

“He’s still a bit of a thinker and the blinkers have definitely done the trick,” Payne said.

“I would think so [there is improvement to come] definitely.”

Williams was riding the dual black-type winner for the first time and said he is in the mix with what is likely to line up in next month’s $3.5 million two-year-old race.

“Instrumental to that result was probably having the blinkers on,” Williams said.

“He’s quite an unusual, very relaxed type of two-year-old but most importantly he’s very solid.

“He’s a very good solid two-year-old and so far with the line up that is heading to the Golden Slipper, he’d be a main contender.”

Williams has not yet confirmed which horse he will ride in the two-year-old grand final on April 6.
