This Saturday Sydney’s premier horseman Chris Waller will saddle up three chances in one of the Group 1 majors at Rosehill Gardens with Foreteller, Kelinni and Gatewood all in the Ranvet Stakes 2013 mix.
Running as Race 6 at 3:30pm (AEST) this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) field is down to 11 hopefuls following the early withdrawal of both #9 Single and #10 Mourinho.
Two horses are battling for favouritism in the Ranvet Stakes odds with Australian Cup runner-up Fiveandahalfstar ($3.20) and talented Kiwi mare Silent Achiever ($3.80).
The shortest-priced of Waller’s three-horse contingent meanwhile is Foreteller at a quote of $17 in the Ranvet Stakes betting markets who Waller says is his benchmark runner.
Drawn nicely in gate three with Jim Cassidy to ride, the Dansili six-year-old enjoyed a Group 2 win in the Peter Young Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield two starts back before their disappointing Australian Cup seventh which they will be looking to improve on here.
“Fiveandahalfstar is the benchmark because he is coming out of a harder field in the Australian Cup,” Waller said.
“It was certainly a touch harder and he really toughed it out.”
Refuse To Bend five-year-old Kelinni follows on $18, the rails-drawn runner to be ridden by Nash Rawiller, who like all of Waller’s Ranvet hopes is heading towards the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) back at the track on Golden Slipper Day, April 6.
“They need to be showing something to suggest they are good chances, winning chances in the BMW,” Waller said referring to all three of his Ranvet horses.
A genuine smokey having been thereabouts all spring including their The Metropolitan second, Lexus Stakes win and eye-catching fourth in the Melbourne Cup there’s no doubt Kelinni is looking for more ground than the mile they had last start win ninth in the Chipping Norton.
Imported Galileo stallion Gatewood then rounds out Waller’s Ranvet Stakes chances at $19 after drawing wide in barrier 13, into 11 with the two early scratchings.
Winner of the Geelong Cup last season the stayer was last seen running seventh in the Chipping Norton and is another that will thrive over more distance.
“They ran pass races,” Waller said of both Gatewood and Kelinni in the Chipping Norton.
“Ideally I would have liked them to have been charging to the line but their first-up run in the Apollo Stakes was on a very heavy track and it may have flattened them.”
The three stablemates are all very close in the markets and Waller is also having a hard time separating their chances on Saturday.
“It’s hard to split them,” he said.
“Kelinni did a great job in the Melbourne Cup, Gatewood has a good turn of foot and he’s a Royal Ascot winner and Foreteller is a Group Two winner.”
