Sunline Stakes 2013 Odds – Top Two Hard To Split

This Friday evening Moonee Valley Racecourse will come to life with William Reid Stakes Night and betting on one of the meeting’s feature Group races, the 2013 Sunline Stakes, is shaping up as a tight two horse battle.

Set to run as Moonee Valley Race 6 at 8:20pm (AEST) this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) field is down to 12 mares following the early scratching of #3 Star Of Giselle.

Current Sunline Stakes odds feature two mares battling for top spot with the fight currently led by Spirit Song at $4.40.

Drawn in gate six with Craig Williams to ride Aaron Purcell’s Invincible Spirit five-year-old, runner-up to Solzhenitsyn in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap last October, has had two runs this time in.

Her most recent effort was a close second to Bonaria in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy over the Flemington mile, the mare seeing her pet distance again on Friday night with the same jockey but a better gate and weight.

Hot on Spirit Song’s heels is then $4.50 second pick Lights Of Heaven, Peter Moody’s former Group 1 winner in gate seven with Luke Nolen in the saddle.

Third to Dunaden in last spring’s Caulfield Cup the Zabeel mare comes off a below par first-up run when dead last behind All Too Hard in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m), Moody hoping for improvement off that when she drops in class and goes up in distance.

There are then four other horses under double-figures in the Sunline Stakes betting markets with:

  • #6 There’s Only One ($6) – Moody’s second runner, first-up winner of the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes but was sixth last time out in the Tressday Stakes, has form over the mile but distance is still a bit of a question
  • #4 Hi Belle ($6.50) – John Gunning-trained six-year-old comes off two close thirds at Group 3 level against very similar rivals, most recently just half a length off the winner in the Schweppervescence over this distance
  • #5 Secret Liaison ($9) – Artie Schiller four-year-old steps up in class here, stakes winner over the mile at Mornington during the summer but hasn’t raced in Group company since September last year
  • #11 Tavarnelle ($9) – Hawkes-trained Zabeel mare was second in the Group 3 Tesio over this track and distance during the Cox Plate Carnival, resumed on March 2 when narrowly winning the Group 3 Tressday Stakes at Flemington over 1400m, distance second-up suits

Others at slightly longer odds that could prove the value bet of the race then include early market mover Bonaria ($13) who won the Schweppervescence beating many of these same mares, and Robbie Griffith’s Fastnet Rock four-year-old Family Crest ($15) last seen running a devastatingly close second to Star Of Giselle in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes.
