Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Gai Waterhouse’s star three-year-old Pierro has opened top of the Canterbury Stakes 2013 odds for this Saturday’s Rosehill showdown where the triple Group 1 winner will face off with fellow spruik stablemate More Joyous.
Running as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:50pm (AEST) this year’s $350,000 Group 1 Cellarbrations Canterbury Stakes (1300m) features a smashing final field of 10 autumn stars.
Heading the early Canterbury Stakes odds is Lonhro colt Pierro in gate seven with Jim Cassidy riding who is at a short $2.30 to bring his elite level trophy tally to four having won the autumn 2YO triple crown as a juvenile last autumn.
Pierro resumed on March 2 when the narrow winner in the wet in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) here, the gun galloper to have come on fitness wise since then with the firmer ground to suit on Saturday.
Following Pierro is the Canterbury Stakes betting markets is then their Doncaster Mile winning stablemate More Joyous at $3.
The six-year-old More Than Ready mare hasn’t raced since her 11th in the Cox Plate, an event Pierro ran a slashing third in.
A genuine turf great More Joyous always thrives during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival including last year when she won the Canterbury, then a Group 2 event, first-up before saluting in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes – Doncaster Mile – Queen Elizabeth Stakes triple.
Saturday she will jump from barrier four with regular rider Nash Rawiller retaining his association, the big question being whether she can get the better of her stablemate Pierro.
The only other single-figure fancy to take out the first Group 1 running of the Canterbury Stakes is then Moment Of Change at $4.80.
One of two fancies for Black Caviar’s trainer Peter Moody along with Stradbroke Handicap winner Mid Summer Music ($41), Barley A Moment four-year-old Moment Of Change has had two runs this time in producing two Group 1 seconds.
First-up they were the brave runner-up behind superstar Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes before improving when a nose away second to Shamexpress in the Newmarket Handicap last time out.
Moody knows it’s a tough assignment for his Spring Champion Stakes winner but believes Moment Of Change isn’t without their chance against Waterhouse’s duo.
“Obviously we’re taking on Pierro and More Joyous,” Moody said.
“More Joyous, the Black Caviar of Sydney, she’s all bar unbeatable there. And Pierro, the rising superstar of racing along with All Too Hard to maybe take Black Caviar’s mantle.
“But this horse is going absolutely super.”
Other longer-priced contenders out to score an upset then include the resuming Joe Pride-trained Rain Affair ($15), the Grahame Begg-trained Secret Admirer ($31) racing for the first time since her Emirates Stakes third, and the Lionel Cohen-trained Aeronautical ($31) who was a close third when a long neck away third in the Newmarket – all at very juicy odds.
