Last year’s upset Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar has opened top of the Ranvet Stakes 2013 odds for this weekend’s clash at Rosehill Gardens, the Hotel Grand three-year-old well-weighted to score their second Group 1 victory.
One of the key races on the Sydney program this Saturday, the $400,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) features a field of 14 smart gallopers following the early scratching of #9 Single, the top fancy of which is the Anthony Cummings-trained Fiveandahalfstar.
The youngster, who will carry the 54.kg light-weight in the Ranvet with Peter Robl to ride them from their ideal barrier four draw, also boasts the fitness edge here having had three good runs this time in.
They have finished second in all three of their autumn assignments, the most recent of which was their short half-head loss to Super Cool in the Group 1 Australian Cup over this distance at Flemington on March 9.
Tipped to improve off that and enjoy their weight advantage here, the 2013 Australian Derby-bound Fiveandahalfstar sits as the $3 favourite in the current Ranvet Stakes betting markets.
Roger James’ smart Kiwi mare Silent Achiever is also well-supported to score her second Group 1 trophy, last year’s NZ Derby winner opening second pick in the Ranvet Stakes odds.
The O’Reilly four-year-old’s last time in the winner’s stall was Cox Plate Day during the spring where she beat home Rangirangdoo to win the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m).
This time in she has had two runs, a first-up second at home in NZ before travelling to Sydney for the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at the start of the month where she ran a length away fourth behind Shoot Out.
Getting up to the 2000m should suit on Saturday and Silent Achiever, drawn in barrier eight with James McDonald to ride, pays $3.70 behind Fiveandahalfstar.
There is just one other runner under $10 in the markets then with Manighar at $7.50.
Early support has been coming for Peter Moody’s star import who is out to replicate their stunning autumn prep from last year where they became the first horse in history to take out the Australian Cup – Ranvet Stakes – The BMW treble.
The rising eight-year-old Linamix gelding hasn’t won a race since The BMW 12 months ago and needs to improve notably on their first-up 11th when beating home just one other runner in the Chipping Norton.
Other Ranvet Stakes hopefuls at longer odds with genuine claims then include 2011 Victoria Derby champ Sangster ($12) coming off a Group 1 Auckland Cup win over the two miles, last winter’s Doomben Cup victor Mawingo ($14) who was a below par 10th in the Australian Cup last start, and Zabeel six-year-old Maluckyday ($14) looking to return to their former glory after a number of hit-and-miss preps.
