Jockey Ric McMahon will be back aboard Spirit Of Boom when the big Queensland sprinter takes on wonder mare Black Caviar in the Group 1 2013 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
McMahon has ridden the five-year-old plenty of times throughout his consistent career but hasn’t partnered him since his solid sixth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at the Brisbane Winter Carnival.
Both McMahon and Spirit Of Boom will be taking on the might of Black Caviar for the first time as Australia’s best horse shoots for win number 24.
McMahon described it as a “thrill” to be lining up alongside the champion but like all those that have come up against the world’s best, he admits beating her is almost impossible.
“She’s probably the best racehorse I’ve seen and probably will ever see,” McMahon said.
McMahon has been on Spirit Of Boom for his two most recent wins, both the Goldmarket Handicap and the Magic Millions Cup last January.
Despite winning nearly $900,000 in prizemoney, the Tony Gollan-trained entire hasn’t won in 14 months.
But he has impressed in the top grade on a number of occasions including a flashing third in the Oakleigh Plate in February.
A good performance good see Spirit Of Boom book a ticket to the international stage, with Gollan nominating both him and stablemate Temple Of Boom for the KrisFlyer International Sprint in Singapore in May.
Spirit Of Boom is one of six rivals for Black Caviar on Friday night and is third favourite at $26.
The champ is at $1.04 ahead of Perth gelding Luckygray ($21). Others contesting the William Reid Stakes include Karuta Queen ($26), Fawkner ($51), Good Ba Ba ($126) and Linton ($201).
