Paul Messara-trained entire Mahisara is favourite to kick off his autumn campaign with a bang in the Group 3 2013 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) today.
The four-year-old, who will be having his first start of the autumn, is the $4.50 top elect at bookmaker.com.au in a quality 13-horse field.
Mahisara hasn’t run since November when he scored back-to-back wins including the Group 3 Sandown Stakes.
Market mover and second favourite is Guy Walter’s lightly-raced gelding Jacquinot Bay who has been backed in from $5.50 to $4.80.
The five-year-old has won six of seven starts and is being aimed at the Group 1 Doncaster Mile next month.
Walter says he is confident his charge is in good order but admits he has to produce a big performance in order to get to the Doncaster.
“He needs to be winning a race like this to get into the field and prove his worth,” Walter said.
A trio of horses share the third line of betting, with Said Com, Raspberries and Laser Hawk all at $7.
Laser Hawk will carry the topweight of 59kg which he earned on his performances from last autumn when he wont he Group 1 Rosehill Guineas and finished third in the Australian Derby.
Said Com was a Group 1 placegetter in the Randwick Guineas last autumn but has struggled in two starts so far this campaign.
Darley mare Raspberries cna be hit and miss but is a triple black-type winner and has won at the track in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap in 2011.
No other runner falls under double figures, with Darley’s last-start winner Bello joined at $10 by Famous Seamus.
Others contesting the Newcastle Newmarket include Chris Waller’s Group 2 winner Triple Elegance ($12) and Kevin Moses’ six-year-old gelding All Legal ($21).
