It’s A Dundeel Tops Australian Derby 2013 Odds

Murray Baker’s last-start Randwick Guineas winner It’s A Dundeel has been installed top of the 2013 Australian Derby odds for the next month’s lucrative three-year-olds showdown at Royal Randwick.

The High Chaparral colt, winner of the Spring Champion Stakes from last season, enjoyed the run of the race at Warwick Farm last weekend holding off Proisir to take out the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) by half a length.

Their second elite level triumph saw them confirm the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 13 as their major Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival goal.

Bookies around the country reacted accordingly too with It’s A Dundeel now the firm $3 favourite in the futures Australian Derby odds.

Occupying the second line of Australian Derby betting is then last spring’s Victoria Derby champ Fiveandahalfstar at $3.80.

The Anthony Cummings-trained Hotel Grand gelding has had three runs this time in for three close second place finishes most recently when defeated by the narrowest of margins in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 9.

They race again this weekend at Rosehill Gardens in the $400,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) taking on a field full of 2013 The BMW-bound stayers.

There are then two other horses under double figures in the early Australian Derby markets with Peter Gelagotis’ recent Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes winner Hvasstan and Alister Clark runner-up Philippi both on $9.

Other three-year-olds at slightly longer prices but still in the top half of the betting then include Ekraar filly Habibi ($10) who won the Group 1 NZ Derby at home at the start of the month, Gai Waterhouse’s Randwick Guineas runner-up Proisir ($12), Randwick Guineas third placed Tatra ($14), NZ Derby third place-getter Castlzeberg ($17) and the Mark Kavanagh-trained Sheer Talent ($18).
