Golden Slipper Hopefuls Named in 2013 Todman Stakes Field

A start in next month’s 2013 Golden Slipper is on the line for the 10 colts and geldings contesting traditional lead-up race the 2013 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Included in the field is David Payne-trained colt Criterion who was most recently seen winning the Black Opal Stakes in Canberra.

After the Black Opal win jockey Glyn Schofield gave the improving colt a glowing endorsement heading towards the Slipper.

“He’s got enough class to win a race like the Slipper,” Schofield said

Needing a big performance to gain a Slipper start is Queensland gelding Whiskey Allround who was a game second to Sweet Idea in the Silver Slipper.

The Tony Gollan-trained  youngster has already collected enough prizemoney to make the Slipper field but is not yet entered.

Connections will have to pay a $150,000 late entry fee which they are only likely to do if he produces a big run this weekend.

David Hayes will send Fast ‘N’ Rocking north from Victoria for the hit-out after he finished second to Miracles Of Life  in the Blue Diamond last month.

Hayes will apply blinkers for the son of Fastnet Rock’s first Sydney hit-out this weekend.

“I know they will improve him out of sight,” Hayes said.

Gerald Ryan-trained colt Charlie Boy has been spruiked among the top Slipper chances but will have to improve off a third-place finish in the Silver Slipper where he was beaten 2 1/2 lengths.

Bringing strong form into the race is Van Pensiero who won at Warwick Farm last month before running second in the Lonhro Plate.

Others contesting the Todman Stakes include the Darley-owned Sidestep, Bjorn Baker’s Windjammer and Paul Messara-trained colt Havana who disappointed when hyped on debut to finish seventh.
