Jacquinot Bay will be get the opportunity to stake his claims as a genuine 2013 Doncaster Mile (1600m) contender today when he starts among the favourites in the Group 3 2013 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m).
The lightly-raced five-year-old is rated a $5.50 chance for what will be the biggest test of his career to date.
Trainer Guy Walter has set him on a Doncaster path and he has certainly shown signs of a quality horse in the making.
The Galileo gelding has won six of seven starts, with his only loss a second to Gai Waterhouse’s well-regarded galloper Strawberry Boy on city debut in September.
Jockey Blake Shinn missed Saturday’s Warwick Farm meeting due to the flu but returns today and is clearly excited about being aboard the emerging horse.

Walter has always had a strong opinion of Jacquinot Bay but said he “needs to be winning” today in order to prove he is good enough to go to the Doncaster.
“He will be borderline to get a Doncaster start so he will need to do something,” Walter said.
“This will be the biggest test for him but I’m happy with how he is going.”
Current favourite for the Newcastle Newmarket at $4.50 is Mahisara who will be running first-up after winning three of four starts during the spring including the Group 3 Sandown Stakes.
The Paul Messara-trained entire has won six of 15 starts and is likely to be targeted at bigger races at the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
