Gary Portelli will wait and see how Rebel Dane fares in the Group 1 2013 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) before committing to a start in the 2013 Doncaster Mile.
The talented three-year-old was beaten four lengths when fourth in the Randwick Guineas (1600m) on Saturday, leaving some doubts over his ability to run a strong 1600m.
Portelli admits he is not quite sure whether that is the case, or the race pattern and inside run on questionable ground caused Rebel Dane’s downfall in the Guineas.
“They went quick from a long way out and I think that might have taken the zip out of him,” Portelli said.
“We’re still there, we’re probably going to go around in the Ryder and that will tell us where we’re at.”
The California Dane colt suffered a cut to this heel during the Randwick Guineas but Portelli said that has been successfully treated.
“He’s 100 per cent sound on it. It was a good job by the boys to make sure it didn’t get infected,” he said.
The George Ryder Stakes will take place on April 6 at Rosehill, two weeks before the Doncaster. If Rebel Dane makes it to the Doncaster starting line he will carry the minimum of just 52kg.
Portelli is set for a big autumn campaign, with Stratum colt All The Talk Golden Slipper bound after a thrashing 3 1/2 length win in the Group 3 Skyline Stakes on Saturday.
“All’s good he’s 100 per cent and I think he’s even come on since the race,” Portelli said.
Rebel Dane is considered a $15 Doncaster chance in the Doncaster while All The Talk is at $19 for the Slipper.
