A mouth-watering showdown between top 2013 Golden Slipper fancies Overreach and Villa Verde will take place at Rosehill on Saturday in the Group 2 2013 Reisling Stakes (1200m).
The pair head into the traditional Slipper lead-up occupying the top two spots in the market for the $3.5 million juvenile feature, with Overreach at $3.90 and Villa Verde $6.50.
Overreach, heading Gai Waterhouse’s powerful Slipper team, shot into favouritism after walloping her Widden Stakes rivals by six lengths at Rosehill last month.
Tommy Berry rode her to victory in the Widden Stakes and will partner her throughout her autumn campaign.
Villa Verde however, will have a new rider, with Hugh Bowman taking over from the suspended Michael Rodd.
The Victorian filly will be making her Sydney debut and having her first start since November after bursting on to the scene at the Spring Carnival.
No horse got close to the Shaun Dwyer-trained galloper in her debut campaign as she won back-to-back Listed races in Melbourne.
Included in that was a 1/2 victory in the Inglis Debutants Stakes where she was far too strong for Overreach.
Villa Verde had a jump-out and Bendigo last week after a solid build-up, leaving Dwyer confident about her chances this weekend.
“She’s a lot more forward than I anticipated,” Dwyer said.
“She was a great spring horse and I suppose the times she ran are probably a significant factor.”
Michael Rodd, who will return to ride her in the Golden Slipper, has continually endorsed the talented two-year-old as a Golden Slipper horse.
Rodd said her professionalism at an early age had her right in the mix for the world’s richest two-year-old race.
